There's certainly a random element to which directions we go, with plenty of opportunities to get derailed and redirected. I went in a fairly straight line, although changing jobs now every 5-10 years, perhaps staying too much on the track. Life is such a spectacle in any case that whether all the details turn out optimally or not is almost beside the point.
