Yes earthquake science shows are horrible all around. I think Discovery or Natgeo has produced at least one decent one. But even as an amateur my knowledge is well above what they present in those specials. Its always about "Two plate boundaries who grind against each other and then when the pressure on either side becomes too much they snap in a violent act and that is what produces an earthquake". Ummm gee thanks already know that. Then they ALWAYS show the obligatory scene of the cable cars climbing the hills of San Francisco and the view of the 101 from one of canyon tops in LA feeding into downtown LA with some ominous music in the background-then the narrative, "Los Angeles is sitting on a ticking TIME BOMB!" LOL I wish so much these shows would tag along with scientists such as yourself as they go on expeditions, make their hypothesis, and even speculate. It would be fun to see them in the trenches and analyzing data. I'll have to look on youtube, found ONE show like this. But yeah the rest leave a lot to be desired.
