Java earthquakes (preliminary Magnitude Mb 6.7)

The Ms 6.7 Kuril Island earthquake was followed by a second large earthquake (preliminary Mb 6.7) in Java. The preliminary parameters for this event are: 25May2001 05:05:57 7.9S 109.8E mb=6.7 NEIS JAWA, INDONESIA Earthquakes of this magnitude are relatively rare and usually occur at intermediate or deep hypocenters (100-600 km depth). If this magnitude holds, this will be the largest earthquake under Java since a 6.9 on Feb. 11, 1952 (49 years ago). Since 1900, 12 events have been recorded with Mw>=6.5 within 300 km of this epicenter. Java is heavily populated and a shallow earthquake of this size in the region could do major damage. A deep earthquake would be felt, but probably not result in major damage to structures.
