some not happy with show

There was an email discussion yesterday about this show and whether we want to make our Haiti cruise available for something like Discovery Channel (there is no bunk space left). One scientist whose part on the show was entirely cut, but who has not seen it because he was in Haiti, heard from friends/colleagues that it was really disappointing, and that we should not go the TV route. Another, who was shown, and who I thought came across really well, noticed the same thing that HW and I noticed; that the tsunami scenario was completly unrealistic for Gulf of Mexico and SE USA (shallow water and land pretty much rules that out), as well as the GPS work being cut.

You have to be a little careful as Roger Bilham is wandering around Port au Prince talking about construction when there are probably dead people in the buildings he is looking at.

My take was that you do need to make an effort at communication to the public, and that Discovery Channel often does a better job with more science than Nova (although Nova Science Now short segments are good). Yesterday I went to a talk on the Copenhagen climate meeting. The need for outreach was underscored by questions and comments from the audience: One said that the Missouri legislature is trying this coming week to pass or debate bills to say that man does not cause climate change and that is cap and trade is passed is USA, Missouri cannot participate (I suppose I should check if this is true; have not heard this elsewhere).
