Penny, there is a lot of intense deformation of the Monterey Formation northeast of Santa Maria (along Hhwy 166 for example). Don't know how much contraction (and shear) the GPS had shown since a paper about 1990 (Feigl and others). I think the Santa Maria area had relatively large quake(s) early 20th century (?)
