Yesterday I posted a set of statistics for California seismicity indicating that Southern California was due for an earthquake of Ml>=3. An earthquake east of Los Angeles this morning occurred with Ml 3.9. This is the largest earthquake in the southern California region since February 11, 2001 (92 days). This year southern California has seen two periods of activity at these magnitude levels or greater. The first occurred on 14 January in the Los Angeles area when Ml 4.0 and 4.3 earthquakes occurred following the Mw 7.6 in El Salvador. The second period was Feb. 10-11 when earthquakes of 3.9, 4.2 and 5.2 occurred in the Twenty-nine Palms and Big Bear City areas respectively. The earthquake this morning had the following preliminary parameters (SCSN): 14MAY2001 17:13:30 34.2N 117.4W ML=3.9 W of Devore, CA
