Cal State Long Beach hole in ground |
I am back in the heartland after a week at Cal State Long beach. I got a quick 20 minute skate on a pond to warm back up for a game tonight against the Mizzou J.V....the oldest of whom would be 30 years younger than me. there is a large hole in the ground where the CSU-LB Geology building used to be. They passed some bond issue so that they could build a new building there. But, I was told that no one will buy California bonds, so no building is being built. This hole is really large...looks like size of football field. Alternatively, the story about not being able to sell bonds may not be correct: I read in L.A. times that almost all projects like this in California have been put on hold. So, the Geology department had to move out of their building, which was torn down, and squeeze in with other science departments. Another topographic feature at CSU-LB is a rather steep hillside...which cuts through the edge of the university center/restaurants etc. I'd guessed that in this area of a sedimentary basin to have a hillside like this it must be an active fault or fold scarp. I was told it was the Newport-Inglewood fault. I suppose if the NIF fires off and the restaurants are damaged they could always have BBQ in the hole where the new science building is supposed to be.
