Re: Update on Sun Activity: this is a blogger |
Your link is to a blog. This blogger, Michael Asher, is mixed up in nonsense. First, OK, interesting that there have not been any sunspots for 45 days...looks like that link is legitimate. But, Asher's own article has a figure of the geomagnetic planetary index, which I link. The last 2 years or so have only been a little quieter than the previous solar minimum. Tiem will tell whether the next solar maximum is very quiet: I'm not convinced. But, see my next post for discussion of quiet sun vs. temperature. The other thing Asher seems to be mixed up in is some study of whether climate scientists endorse "man made global warming". They say 48% of papers on climate science are neutral: they don't accept or reject the hypothesis. By that logic, I would be neutral: I (with co-authors) published a paper on initiation of the West Antarctic ice sheet during 2007 in "Geology". I did not specifically "accept" that man's input of CO2 and other greenhouse gases are leading to warming. It's not the point of my paper. This is real garbage that this guy is mixed up in: I just spent a fair amount of time trying to see which origanization he is affiliated with: who pays him or has paid him in the past. It really reeks of ExxonMobil, but I did not specifically find that link. I just don't have time: have to do more interpretation of the faults offshore Istanbul so I can write an AGU abstract (due Sept 10) and make a poster for Southern California Earthquake Center (have to plot it Sept 6 or sooner). A lot of this stuff is like creationism or denying plate tectonics. Like creationism, there may be a lot of scientists, mainly working for oil companies or in non-earth science fields, who are being fooled by concerted efforts to spread disinformation (see my posts on ExxonMobil a couple of months ago).
