Re: Unpredictable prediction? |
The 1952 quake has interested me for many years. Ever since I found a book about it in my local library. It's a good read - written perhaps in the '60's or 70's (or maybe not so long after the quake), and though it's authoritative, interested laypeople might find some interesting contrasts with current geological/seismological knowledge. IIRC, the earthquake is more frequently referred to as the "1952 Kern County" earthquake, was an M7.5, killed just one or two people, and current thinking is that it might have actually occurred on the Wheeler Ridge Fault. Wheeler Ridge is a compressional feature, which anyone traveling on Hwy 166 might be familiar with. This latest quake appears to be a little east of there, on the White Wolf fault as Penny suggests, but at its extreme west end. I've included a link to a great resource, a clickable fault map. Many of you may be familiar with it, but have forgotten about it, as I did. Click on any fault shown, and you get information on it such as rate of slip, type of motion, etc. Thanks, Penny. http://www.data.scec.org/faults/nwfault.html Mike Williams Follow Ups: ● Re: Unpredictable prediction? - Mike Williams in Arroyo Grande 14:09:57 - 3/2/2008 (73433) (1) ● Re: Unpredictable prediction? - Mike Williams in Arroyo Grande 14:59:55 - 3/2/2008 (73434) (1) ● Google Earth Shows It At Wheeler Ridge - Mike Williams in Arroyo Grande 16:05:38 - 3/2/2008 (73435) (1) ● Re: Google Earth Shows It At Wheeler Ridge - PennyB 22:34:43 - 3/2/2008 (73436) (0) |
