warming oceans and less hurricanes |
The title of this article: Warmer Ocean Could Reduce Number of Atlantic Hurricane Landfalls, may be a bit misleading. By article, I mean a release to the public: the linked article is not the scientific paper. It is interesting, but if you read it, I take it to mean that warming ocean in certain areas could lead to increased wind shear in the tropical Atlantic and hence less landfalling hurricanes on the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts. Warming elsewhere might lead to more of these hurricanes. Plus, the whole thing sounds sketchy...there are liable to be other studies that say something different in the next few years. There was not really a previous consensus on whether warming would make more hurricanes: I don't read the scientific literature on this...I just read the news items/press releases on this: some said not more hurricanes overall, but those that do form might be more severe (more Cat 3-5, especially more Cat 5, like 2007). If warming oceans were the only thing that happened, there should be both more hurricanes and more severe hurricanes (if there was no change in wind shear and other factors).
