to me, science means remembering what we do and do not know, so that we can learn more. Which is why people like Whiteside would have been much better served by picking his most likely hypothesis or two and testing it right, rather than throwing 100 ideas out in his thesis, many ridiculous, and testing none of them. I don't know how that thesis got past his advisors.
