I remember Harry Glicken from UCSB. Didn't know him well, but we shared coffee at the Ucen and he almost talked me into going to Japan to teach English.

Yes...the Kraffts took wayyy too many chances. However, their films probably saved thousands at Pinatubo. The geologists showed their films to the Air Force folks there to convince them that something like this could happen. And the deaths of the Kraffts (and Harry, who never got over Dave Johnston's death) at Unzen sorta pushed things along and the subsequent evacuations DID save thousands. Guess that I'm trying to make sense of something sad.
