Brian queried us thusly (and rhetorically): "And what's so special about the _edge_ of the shadow zone anyway?" (just for grins, I used a usually handy add-on program called "WordWeb" to check the definition of "rhetorically." Here's the definition it provided: "In a rhetorical manner. [example:] 'What can be done?' he asked rhetorically' How's that for a circular definition?) Well, as Shakespeare wrote: "There's the rub" (I haven't read much of Shakespeare, I just like to appear erudite). Well, a very brief Google search using "Whiteside" and "Far field aftershocks" revealed little. I would be very interested in finding out just what is "so special" about that zone. Logically, at the margins of an unusual phenomenon, that phenomenon would be expected to diminish.
