Bob Yeats had a talk on Pakistan and the 2005 earthquake and he showed an aerial photo of the fold scarp...the fault did not quite reach the surface. The view was maybe a km across...maybe less. Every house on the hanging wall (Moved up) was destroyed and 80% of the people in them killed (1600 people). It looked like none of the houses on the footwall..or at least few, were destroyed. Something to think about when you go to buy a house in various places in California...although it the footwall in California areas have their own problems because of deep sedimentary basins.
