I just learned in my Anthropology class that there was subduction along the eastern side of Africa about 16 million years ago which caused that side of the continent to rise. It subsequently made a vast change to the entire continents flora and moved it from primarily tropical rainforests to what it is today. Part of the great Primate diversification and Ape extinction.
