Oregon Volcanism Not A Moot Point |
Hi All, First of all, I wanted to say Thank You to Dennis for bringing forth that terrific link on the volcanics off-shore Oregon. It has exactly what I was looking to find, current up to the minute information. Now, let us digress. The situation off-shore Oregon does not make watching the area a moot point, actually, it makes it stronger. We all know volcanoes are formed by subduction activity, which confirms my original thought that the plate that moved in the Washington area does bring the connection to Oregon. Going back, let's have a look at what has transpired. Before the Seattle quake, there was a series of quakes north of the area off of BC. Then the subduction quake occurs. Initially there was a series of micro earthquakes from northern WA to the northern part of Oregon. I was looking at a much bigger picture than just these area's, that's why I said watch for the NW Territories and Oregon. The NW Territories have had two quakes since I posted about this and offshore Oregon is cooking. However, let us not forget, this volcanic activity is occurring at the juncture of the Gorda Plate. Meanwhile, at the Triple Junction we are also seeing increased activity. If you look at the map of the NW area in Seattle and Oregon what you see is another round of micro earthquakes. This says to me the area has not settled down. This to was confirmed recently by engineers halting any attempts to reconstruct over passes and fix some roads because the ground is not stable yet. In my summation of the near too long term future is a whole host of probabilities: A. Seattle could indeed have another large quake if the plate that is moving decides to take another leap. B. The NW Territories may see some 5ish activity. C. The volcanic activity offshore Oregon could continue, but in that we have another problem. D. Another subduction earthquake at the Triple Junction in the high 6's to mid 7's. Just imagine taking a round saucer and placing it over the area where the micro earthquakes are occurring and extending just a bit further east, at the top you will have the NW Territories and at the bottom Oregon. Will the activity from the north influence this volcanic area and then possibly push the Gorda plate enough to create a subduction event in the Triple Junction? Today, of course we can't say pro or con. But I think the best part that may be over looked is that this is an excellent time to study the events as they unfold. Become the true researchers we all are; just like amateur astronomers looking for those comets, we are looking for future earthquakes. Rather exciting, I think. Yeah, I got a new keyboard and lots and lots of work to do. As for Don eating crow, I don't know how to fix that, so he has consented to taking me to dinner and I'm not talking about McDonalds.
