I don't know whether that particular fault was previously known or not, but:

(a) there was plenty of reason to suppose that such an earthquake could occur, from the general tectonics and historical patterns;
(b) it is a big mistake to rely too much on what you think the fault geometry is - one should always make allowances for the hidden ones.
