Thousand Palms Oasis

Here is an update on the springs at the Thousand Palms Oasis, which is on the San Andreas Fault off of Thousand Palms Canyon road in Riverside County. Gary and I took my sister and her husband to Thousand Palms Oasis on March 18th, 2007. They have started coming up so far up on the hill that they have had to build wooden walkways to keep the trail above water level. The springs used to be down in the canyon floor and only started to move up the hill in the past year and a half to two years. One spring is coming up by the bottom of the steps and occasionally overflows the steps. When we were out there we hiked down to the bottom and there is a LOT of water running out in the stream. The lady behind the counter told us that the USGS is out there fairly often digging trenches and they always mention how overdue the San Andreas is for movement in the area.
