The M5.4 was strike-slip. I think that there are a fair amount of strike slip quakes within the subducting plate. Plate Motion of the subducting plate is oblique, not perpendicular to interior North American plate. Either there could be oblique subduction (which globally I think is rare), or right-lateral slip can be partitioned onto NW-SE faults on the continent, or in the subducting plate (I get the names mixed up...there is Juan de Fuca, Explorer, etc..).
