I guess the much greater number of M7+ quakes in the northern hemisphere is because there are probably more km of subduction and collision plate boundaries in the northern hemisphere, while the southern hemisphere plate boundaries are mostly oceanic spreading centers, which rarely have M7+ (and then on transforms). The west coast of south America is subduction, and there are some oceanic subduction zones in the south Pacific...but I think much less than north.... Chris
