Barbara, This size of X-Flare is not unusual, but it is at this point(begining) of the 11 year sun cycle. An unusual size would be in the X30 range for the whole cycle. The flare doesn't affect the earth that much. Its the Protons and CME from the flare that affect the earth the most when directed at the earth.
