I'm not sure. It almost looks like it could be some sort of tar seepage. Or it could be charred from a fire. It would be interesting to find out just where the picture was taken and get more pictures showing the context.

I'll have to admit it took me a few minutes before that picture started looking "wrong". It really does look like that rock is floating there.
