I too have been there a couple of times, but It's been several years. The first time was in the dead of the night. Cows were a problem on the road to Parkfield from Cholame, but luckily there eyes glowed in my headlights from quite a distance which gave me time to slow down before totaling my Camaro. The second time I took a dirt road from a few miles west of Coalinga off the 198 to Parkfield. Interesting trip but really hard on the car. A 4x4 would have been much better. Last year a pulled the same offroad stunt but from the 166 to the 58 Along the SA in the Carrizo Plain. There were some very impressive fault scarps just before the 58.

Are there tours offered at Parkfield? That would be quite interesting to see.
