KCBS Special Earthquake Report |
Anyone here in the LA area catch KCBS 1100 news story tonight about the next potential big one here in LA? In case you missed it, they interviewed this siesmologist who says there is a possibility that when the Southern San Andreas gives, it could provoke a simultaneous major quake on the Sierra Madre fault, causing one big super quake in LA that would be 8.3+ on the richter scale. The whole story was sensationlized in true LA media fashion and was definetly designed to scare, and then hopefully capture ratings for the number 3 ranked station. What got me was when they said the scientist was basing his theory on a super quake that happened in 1957 in Magolia. Two faults very simialar to the San Andreas and Sierra Madre were involved. But here was the kicker. They said that there were few reports from the locals about the quake because they theorize that the quake shook so hard that it knocked people out! Again, of course the media tries then to make people in LA think a similar mind altering quake is on the way here too. Anyway, it was interesting for whatever educational value and to know that scientists more and more are accepting a theory of quakes jumping from one fault to another, a theory that I understand before 92 was considered absurd. And it is an interesting insight into how are lovely media here in CA will try to educate and scare the pants off people for ratings.
