Re: Is Something Up at Mt. Rainier?

May have a clue, (hope so or else I'm clueless), a fellow from Ortig (close to Rainier)recognized the fellow in a Nat Geo mag article who was standing on the stump of a huge tree buried in the last Lahar from Rainier, at Ortig. The man apparently was once the police chief there and is now in charge of emergency prep, in some position that I can't recall. It could be a combination of his own interest in the safety of his community and the interest by nat geo when they wrote the article 2 yrs ago that has some SCARY stuff about the dangers there. That glacier, given the right geologic conditions (as you may know) could melt and come roaring downhill at 90 miles an hour and 1000 feet thick in less time than it would take to ski down it on a quiet day. "Disquieting" to say the least. I somehow think that fellow has a hand in the recent preps. That's what I would do, anyway. I just dug the magazine out again, his name is Scott Fielding and he is the evacuation planner, and in Oregon its the law in Oregon to have regular evacuation and safety drills. Statewide, including E.Q. and Tsunamis. The magazine is May 98 and the article is the best I've ever read on Cascadia, "Living on Fire"...mb. p.s. Sept 93 had a 5.9m near Klamath falls, the largest eq felt in Ore since 1872. USGS website has extensive info, photos and history of rainier and other volcanoes. Hope that helped. owe ya one. :)
