Martin - I have/had the same interest as you do - I have gone back to college now and taken a number of geology courses and find it absolutely fascinating. I'm having to now decide if I want to hit the upper division courses and get serious.

I know our junior colleges don't require proof of a high school diploma before taking classes - I'm not sure how canadian education works but you might consider taking a basic geology course - it'll give you a bit more understanding of what you are up to and then decide if you want more. You seem to have the interest.
