sister felt it in Mauii |
My sister felt it strongly in Mauii, but a friend of hers did not feel it strongly in Hilo. My sister is about same distance from quake as Hilo is. There may be some directivity...the focal mechanism is more strike-slip than normal. The interesting thing to me is that there are aftershocks listed, two of M3.1, on Mauii. Mauii has little historical seismicity, but does have a large dormant volcano that had lava flows in the 18th century. There was M5.8 aftershock 7 minutes after the mainshock. There is an earthquake this size or larger every 20 years or so on or around the Island of Hawaii. The largest was M7.9 in 1868, the next was M7.2 in 1975. The 1868 and 1975 quakes caused local tsunamis. The south side of the Island of Hawaii is collapsing southward...the basal detachment faults of that is slipping at 10 cm/yr (the fastest slip on San Andreas fault is about 3.5 cm/yr). But, this quake was not in that area. So, if anyone finds details about the fault that this was on and what is driving it, let me know...
