Re: San Gregorio Fault And The Coulomb Triggering Hypothesis

Hi Don,

No apology necessary. As we all know, we can't know it all, so that's why we need other people. To enlighten those who don't know what you're referencing in regard to my original reason to think the San Gregario might go, let's start with my dream about this place:

In the dream I was looking at the location where the San Gregario Fault is, about mid-way between Watsonville and a little north of Ben Lomond. In the dream I saw the #7 and next to it appeared a red marker like an arrow. It was traveling from the top of the 7 to the bottom. It was a time line. It stopped when it reached the midway point. In the next scene I am out at Point Reyes on the coast. I could see a tsunami had gone over this area from the muck onshore. I saw a man and asked him if he had seen my girlfriend. He looked very forlon and said he hadn't. I think this dream occurred around October 1998.

Last year I sat in on a lecture at the AGU regarding Bay Area faults and heard the presenter say that the San Gregario Fault was as dangerous as any other fault system in the bay area, such as the Hayward Fault, RCF and so forth and he based his opinions on the Coulomb Triggering Hypothesis. He said he believed earthquakes were occurring in a circular field of some distance from Loma Prieta, and in time would be the locations of future earthquakes. (see abstract of Ian Main in the link below)

Since the time of the dream I have watched with great interest all of the small quakes occurring in this area and found from a l964 USGS map, there have been no recent quakes over a 3.0 in the 24 year period the map encompassed (1964-1980). However, sometime ago I did read an article which stated the San Gregario had a 7+ EQ in the 1800's, which I think Don has brought forward. If I recall correctly this discovery was made by trenching.

Anyway, the attached link has some terrific writings from many well known seismologists from around the world and their viewpoints on earthquake prediction, pro and con.
