Re: More About The AGU Experience-Questions |
Don - you said: There have been three such DLP at Long Valley Caldera. In view of the eruption at Mount Pinatubo, Long Valley Caldera could very well start its birth towards a new eruputuion much the same way. You also said there were over 600 LP quakes in the weeks preceeding Pinatubo's eruption. Just when did these LP quakes occur at Long Valley? Did they mention where they occurred ? I think there are at least 3 hot spots there now. Under the Mountain, in the Caldera and then South of the caldera. If they occurred back in 1997-98 or even 1980, it doesn't have much bearing now except that magma was emplaced. I don't believe in much immanent danger at Long Valley - As for possible future activity : I think most likely a 'small event' south of the caldera or if a large quake hits on the fault at the south end of the caldera that squeezes the Mountain, then the mountain may blow. I think the main caldera is the least likely place to worry about at this point in time.
