Triangulation locates the earthquake, measuring the amplitude of the waves gives an estimate of the magnitude. Sophisticated methods will try to match the seismogram swing for swing to give both the focal mechanism and the magnitude. Finding the extent of the fault that broke is more challenging, but also depends on matching all the swings in the seismograms.
