When Frances Mayes resigned from the SFSU faculty and moved to Tuscany, she recommended me to take her place on the faculty. They called me, and I had a terrible week trying to decide whether I wanted to teach again, and in such a large graduate school program. Finally, I decided not to because it would be a 180 mile round trip for me and I thought if I started teaching, that would be the end of my writing. There's only so much time to go around, and I have five kids. I'm glad I said no. I have half of novel #2 written already, work that wouldn't have been done if I'd taken that job.
