I BELIEVE its like 5% of all the bigger quakes (5+?) are proceeded by foreshocks and this percentage only holds for the first 3 days. After that it goes down. Although in my memory of larger CA quakes many had months between so I question the risk going down after 72 hours but that is a USGS/Caltech rule.
