I did not know that Cal is posting notes here. Though I told Cal I could not be interviewed for her book as I was extremely busy while it was being written, I did provide her with some input regarding its content and tone. From both of our points of view (I believe) the book was not really meant to provide a comprehensive scientific discussion of the subjects it covered. Instead, my own input was provided in the hopes that by discussing those subjects in a reasonable manner the book would help move the politics of earthquake forecasting forward. It is my opinion that it is politics within governments and within the scientific community that is holding the science back, not technology. The book covered topics which people in many other countries probably cannot talk about on their own because of their local politics.
