I'd say when something is wrong, it is dead. For instance, the idea that the Earth orbits the Sun works for me, but the idea that the Sun orbits the Earth is dead. There remain questions in planetary science worth pursuing, but not geocentricity.

Others may be more open-minded than I am, and not consider EE dead, just as they might for the historical idea of the Earth as the center of the solar system.
