All your descriptions sound very much like a magnetogram. Is it possible that what you have is in fact something like a simple magnetometer without a recording drum, and your signals are really variations in the declination of the earth's magnetic field? I seem to remember that you had signals on the weekend of 15 July when there was a strong magnetic storm. Have you compared your signals with any local geomagnetic recording station to see if they correlate?
