Re: Don: Bay Area Quake Warning |
Hi Cal. Keep your book. I probably wouldn’t read it since I have a pretty good idea as to what is in it just from what you have been saying. I started studying earthquakes and faults in 1962 while living in Japan. That is where I heard the first phrase about “earthquake prediction” and the first attempt to predict a quake. How do you know a quake is a foreshock until you have the main event? There were two M=5.0+ 15 months and 2 months prior to Loma Prieta quake. How do know they were foreshocks before the main event occurs. Both quakes centered in the Lake Elsman area and were not on the San Andreas fault. The first quake struck at a depth of 13.2 km, 4 km from the future Loma Prieta rupture plane. The second quake struck at a depth of 14.2 km, 5 km from the Loma Prieta plane. For both events one nodal plane strikes northwest and dips steeply northeast, aligned in map view with other earthquakes recorded during 1969-1989. Most faults in this region exhibit components of right-lateral and reverse slip, with the northeast side up. There were three other M=5.0+ earthquakes that occurred 22-26 years before the Loma Prieta event: the 14 September 1963 M=5.4 Salinas-Watsonville event, and the 16 November 1963 M=5.0 and the 18 December 1967 M=5.3 Corralitos events. Were they foreshocks to the Loma Prieta quake? When you look at the number of quakes that occurred within a 5-mile radius of the Loma Prieta quake you will find ordinary events. 1987/01/08 14:52:41.99 37.0603 -121.8790 15.87 1.04 Md 21 91 6 0.03 NC 92079 There was no earthquake swarms such as the ones seen in the Rodgers Creek area in 1981, or the area south of Cholame. Swarms in which no large occurred so swarms don’t always mean a large quake is about to occur. I don’t know of anyone who is more in touch with nature then I am. I started tracking animals 65 years ago. I started hunting when I was 10 years old. Even with these tired 71 old eyes I still see more then you could ever imagine. I have seen studies done by the University of Davis, The Mercury News, The Wasada University in Japan and all found no correlation between the antics of animals and earthquakes. Animals do strange things and it may be earthquake related and then again it may not. I have come this far doing things my way. I will continue doing things my way until there is proof that there is a better way. I don’t see that proof forthcoming.
