Re: Vidale: fact vs anecdotes

OK...One at a time...I am suffering from Writer's Block...So this is a nice way to amuse myself.

Yes, some scientists believe the animals sensed both the underwater earthquake and the tsunami. . .
According to media reports, before the killer waves hit Sri Lanka--and India coastal areas, elephants headed for higher ground, dogs wouldn't go outside, and zoo animals fled into their shelters and wouldn't budge. Wildlife officials reported that at Yala National Park--near the area of main destruction--elephants, leopards, and deer miraculously survived.

"Some have argued that the animals sensed the seismic waves generated by the earthquake, which by traveling faster arrived up to hours before the water waves in the case of Sumatra. While surprising, this is not evidence of earthquake precursors."

The fact that more animals lived than humans died is enough evidence for me.

"Jim is talking about animals sensing earthquakes BEFORE they strike, which is an entirely different kettle of fish."

How do you know for sure that some animals didn't sense the quake before it hit?
