Re: Petraquake |
Hi Kiddo. Don’t get your bloomers in a twist now, but I do have some data that shows a quake further to the north and in the area of Jan’s home. I bet she’s going to love knowing that. It should occur on 02/18/06 with the same magnitude range, which as you well know I never really know what the magnitude is going to be. As you already know the last major quake to have occurred on the Rodgers Creek fault was somewhere between 1730 and 1760 and is thought to have been somewhere north of Santa Rosa with a rupture to the south that was about 65Km (40 miles) long. Of course there is the Mare Island quake, which as far as I know no one has ever really determined where the epicenter for that quake is. No rupture for the Mare Island quake has been found on the Rodgers Creek fault that could be associated with the fault. Of course there is always the chance they didn’t dig in the right place. Then again maybe there was no fault rupture. The M=6.3 occurred near Mare Island on 03/31/1898. It was noted that the strongest and most numerous reports of aftershocks were from Sonoma and Lakeville. The Rodgers Creek Fault is about 20 km (12 miles) west of Mare Island. It has been suggested that the Franklin fault may have caused the quake however there is no indication of recent activity. I’m always amazed at how much we know and yet still not really know anything.
