Good question, and good responses (and this is from someone who does believe there ARE such things as "dumb questions"). And, Don, as always, you've done some good research, and provided relevant, interesting information. And I'm pleased that you put that information in quotes and provided the attribution to the original authors . . . I am, though, a bit surprised that nobody on this seismology-related board pointed out the important distinction between Magnitude and Intensity. The original poster inquired about where the anticipated quake would "feel like a Magnitude 5". I suggest googling "Earthquake Intensity Scale" for further elaboration. And one final note: The anticipated Cascadia Subduction Zone quake (the one which would be a repeat of the 1700 quake), would not be strike-slip. It would be a subduction zone event. An interesting characteristic of this type (thrust) of quake is that accelerations are greatest on the "hanging wall" (look it up), which, of course, would include all of the onshore region east of the rupture zone.
