Re: arc of quakes |
Hi Chris. A seismologist has reviewed all of the quakes with the exception of the one near Dunsmuir however the quake can be plainly seen on seismographs in the area. It appears that the quakes could be associated with the Walker Lane Belt with the exception of the quake near Warm Springs, Nevada. It appears to be a little to far to the east of the known position of the Walker Lane Belt. I talked to some seismologist at the AGU last year and their feeling was that the Walker Lane Belt could be as far west as Mount Shasta, but would require more data to say for sure one way or the other. GPS data shows surface movement pretty close to the same directions as the quakes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the movement is in the same direction or at the same rate at depth. A lot goes on under the surface that we can only guess at. Just because everyone agrees with one theory doesn’t mean it’s correct, only that everyone agrees because there may not be better theory. http://www.geo.arizona.edu/geo5xx/geos577/projects/walkerlane/ http://www.seismo.unr.edu/htdocs/WGB/SierraNevada.html http://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2005AM/finalprogram/abstract_94772.htm http://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2005AM/finalprogram/abstract_93870.htm
