The Ribbon Candy Earthquake Contest

Hi All,

Have you ever noticed how ribbon candy looks like a seismogram? Well, it does and it comes in a many colors as do assorted earthquake maps. You have the colors of the faults, rivers, peaks and valleys and the quakes too, in yellows, reds and blues.

The winner of this contest will receive a piece of Parkfield and a bag of ribbon candy as their prize. The piece of Parkfield is a hunk of chert nodule in pastel green and it comes from an area exactly on the fault where the posts mark it.

And here's how you win:

Contest opens December 2nd at 12:01 am PST and runs until midnight December 31, 2005.
The earthquake can be no lower in magnitude than 5.0 as determined by the USGS/NEIC web page at the end of a 24 hour period following the earthquake.

It must occur within the following boundaries: The States of Washington, Oregon, California and the Baja Peninsula, or a maximum of 600 kilometers off-shore of any of these locations.

You may select three locations.

You MUST enter the contest no later than December 1st, midnight PST.

I am the judge of the contest and I will make the final determination as to the winner.
If an earthquake of 5.0 or larger occurs within any of these area's, the person who selected the closest location will be declared the winner.
As an example, if someone selects Mt. Lassen and the earthquake occurs at Mt. St. Helens and there are no closer entries, the Mt. Lassen entry will be the winner.

So, play to win and be creative in your choices. Playing this contest does not constitute the winners or losers as being earthquake predictors.
