Hi Chris. Something has always bothered me. If you were to build a house to withstand the motion of a strike slip quake would that same house be able to withstand the motion of a thrust quake? Is there enough difference in the motion that a house could hold up against one type of quake, but not another type of quake? Most of the houses that collapsed during the Kobe, Japan quake were two story homes. The one thing they had in common was that they all had heavy tiled roofs for strong winds during a typhoon. The quake jerked the bottom of the house from under the roof so it leaned to one side and just kept going. Very few single story homes came down however they did sustain quite a bit of damage.
