Sorry to say for me it was a job.

When I started with the government it was at double my current salary at that time, a pretty powerful incentive. Most of the work was just that; drudgery. Read 120 seismograms, copy the signals, write up the results. Day after day after day.....

Then I got into programming. Finally, a challenge. Getting a mainframe to jump thru hoops was a joy. Creating programs to solve real problems dealing with real data was very satisfying. Still is, which is why I continue to do it on my PC.

That PC is more powerful than the mainframe I started on BTW.
