Chris,

Considering the financial cutbacks in geosciences volunteers could be of benefit to science organizations in several ways; from routine clerical jobs, preparing staff needs as volunteers for meetings and research endeavors.

But in the future it might not hurt to follow the lead of the BGS. 50% of their income is raised from doing engineering work on local contracts.

When the anniversary of the 1906 earthquake arrives most people in the Bay Area will find out how many have volunteered for the Centennial Alliance. Not only are they volunteering to do local events, but probably donating an easy million in printing and distribution of earthquake safety materials. The projects which will take place starting in January have been underway for two years. That represents a lot of volunteer time and energy.

What a lot of people forget is this simple statement, "all you have to do is ask" and believe me, volunteers will arrive. Say thanks frequently and feed them and you'll have them for years to come.
