realtime science..active fault |
Hey Gals and Guys, this is cool...we are running along an active fault, mapping it with swath bathymetry. I laid out the "waypoints" this morning...using existing maps and the 3D software that I use and a grid of the existing bathymetry that wife in suburbia prepared. You could see these long linear ridges on the "waterfall" monitor. I need sleep but this is exciting....and I have to keep my perfect record intact of not missing any meal. Don...I'll give you a Lat-Long of where it crosses Arguello Canyon at a sharp 2 km right offset that is part of a 5 km broad offset...or you can find that yourself. My notebook with the coordinates is elsewhere on the ship.. We will probably contribute the seafloor trace to the SCEC Community Fault Model. Hey...we may have to name this fault if it is not already named (and I think it is not)....Arguello Canyon fault? Santa Lucia slope fault? We don't know if it is the same fault as the Patton Ridge fault farther south.
