It may well be that he IS talking Parkfield, Petra, and many 'known' rhythmic faults... but perhaps on a much larger scale? :)

Are you familiar with fractals? They can take a small numerical equation, convert it via computer imaging into a huge, highly complex illustration which resembles a paisley pattern. The end result looks, at first, nothing like the original squiggles. BUT, when you can see how they evolve into that larger picture, you can also see the tiny original within each swirl.

This is something like I think he's talking about.
