Hi All. Thought I would take a shot at earthquake reporting. Flash: An earthquake of M>4.1 occurred today in the region of the aftershock zone of San Simeon, California of Dec. 22, 2003 M>6.5. The “first motion mechanism” showed the quake to be almost a pure thrust quake. This is in keeping with the main event of Dec. 22. According to data on the NEIC website the earthquake was felt with maximum magnitude up to M IV in the Cambria and San Simeon areas and was also felt nearly 200 km away in Bakersfield, CA with lesser intensity. Didn’t feel a thing here in Hollister. We get so many in the area that one that small wouldn’t even get our attention. This is the strongest earthquake in the aftershock zone (35.4-36.5N 121.7-122W) in more than seven months since an M>4.0 on Oct. 2, 2004 and the third strongest since the immediate aftershock sequence ended around Dec. 25, 2003. Today's event was followed by aftershocks of M>2.0, 2.1, 2.0 and 2.0. An earthquake of M>2.8 was also recorded west of Del Mar today and was preceded by a foreshock of M>2.0 west of La Jolla. An earthquake of M>3.0 also occurred in the northern Baja California region where a swarm of events has been occurring over the past week. It was followed by additional shocks of M>2.6 and 2.0.
