Petra, what I said I would do is contact my contact at the relief organization CARE. But, I did not do this....probably I should. But, that is all I will do...if I do that. I'm not working on Indonesia...it is very hard for me to make a living as a research scientist, so need to be working on what it is that I am supposed to be doing. It is more likely that I will do something useful that could indirectly save lives.....related to the North Anatolian fault near Istanbul...and I have some a fault representation that I need to provide to SCEC for offhore L.A......and there are others I am supposed to do...
And, then there is climate change...that could kill a lot more people in the next 100 years (by starvation and wars, mainly) than natural disasters....I am working on a climate-related proposal the last 8 or more days and for the next week...
I get paid 50% time...and am worried about getting paid at all next year, and I work on average almost full time...or maybe it is more....I chose an impossible career and then the freaking lunatics running the country are trying to bankrupt us so that the U.S. cannot afford to do science...unless it is for homeland security/other defense....Ah, the middle ages...those were the days...anyone have a leech for my headache..I could use a good bleeding...
