Northern Ash and Gas Eruptions north of latitude 23°N,
(highest plume)

ASO Kyushu, Japan 32.88°N, 131.10°E; summit elev. 1,592 m (1.8 km)
a small explosion on 14 April with a plume of "white smoke" to ~1.8 km; the explosion after hundreds of small earthquakes during the previous 2 weeks

CHIKURACHKI Kurile Islands, Russia 50.325°N, 155.458°E; summit elev. 1,816 m (?2.3 km)
on 7 April an ash-and-gas plume rising to ~2.3 km and extending ~10 km S

KARYMSKY Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia 54.05°N, 159.43°E; summit elev. 1,536 m (?2.5 km)
activity above background levels during 8-15 April, possible ash-and-gas explosions reaching 2.5 km during 12-13 April, ash-and-gas plumes extending ~30 km on 8 and 9 April, ash deposits extending ~10 km on the S side of the volcano

KLIUCHEVSKOI Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia 56.06°N, 160.64°E; summit elev. 4,835 m (low)
activity decreasing during 8-15 April, but above background levels, gas-and-steam plumes to low levels

SHIVELUCH Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia 56.653°N, 161.360°E; summit elev. 3,283 m (2.9 km)
gas-and-steam plumes to ~2.9 km on 8 April, and one extending ~50 km SW on the 14th

ST. HELENS Washington, USA 46.20°N, 122.18°W; summit elev. 2,549 m (2.5 km)
during 13-19 April growth of the new lava dome inside the crater continuing, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash, displacement of the old lava dome slowing for several days around 18 April, but should not be taken to mean that the eruption was ending

VILLARRICA central Chile 39.42°S, 71.93°W; summit elev. 2,847 m (2.9 km)
unusual seismicity during early April, fresh ash deposits seen outside of the volcano's crater

Equatorial Ash and Gas Eruptions at less than 23°N or S

CANLAON Philippines 10.41°N, 123.13°E; summit elev. 2,435 m (4.4 km)
during 13-14 April mild ash emissions producing plumes to a height of ~3.1 km; during 15-17 April moderate-to-strong emissions producing ash plumes to ~4.4 km and depositing ash 16 km SW of the crater

COLIMA Western México 19.514°N, 103.62°W; summit elev. ~3,850 m (6.7 km)
during 13-18 April several explosions, resultant ash plumes rising to a maximum height of ~6.7 km

Vailulu'u the most active Samoan volcano in eruption between April 2001 and April 2005 forming a 293 m tall pillow volcano, named Nafanua, after the Samoan Goddess of War; location in the originally 1000m deep western crater of Vailulu'u still showing substantial seismic activity with epicenters beneath Nafanua, with about four local earthquakes per day, interpreted as pre-eruption seismic activity

POPOCATÉPETL México 19.02°N, 98.62°W; summit elev. 5,426 m (low)
on 19 April light gas emission and incandescence visible

SOPUTAN Sulawesi, Indonesia 01.07°N, E124.43°E; Summit Elev. 1784 m (4.2 km)
ash eruption on 19 April at 2230 to 4.2 km

SPECIAL NOTE

Seige by Volcano Over?

Not only are the week's quakes of lower magnitude, but Kilauea has lost its hot lava fingers entering the sea, Talang volcano stopped erupting, others are under less high an alert, and even on Mount St. Helens things are moving more slowly. The recent volcanism continues with Anatahan and Colima, and the the new Samoan seamount probably belongs to that time. A couple of weeks around the next perigee should clarify whether this is just a pause or starts the quieting before the solar minimum.

Comments or questions are welcome.
