Re: Infrasound...the source for ear tones??

Hi Petra...I wanted to post on some of this but am at UCSB and under real time pressure to accomplish some stuff while I am here (stratigraphy in detail of last 500,000 years near the Oak Ridge fault beneath Santa Barbara Channel). I was actually surprised at the extent of Tom Jordan's recent publications. I was working via email with him until 4 AM March 10...the 100+ page SCEC3 proposal was due March 9 so he had just completed that and the 175 page SCEC-NSF-PIRE (international) was due March 10.....I think he deserved his short break after that....at least I hope he took it. Tom is fantastic as a SCEC director but I'm going to ask to see the SCEC3 proposal because I'm afraid that SCEC is getting ahead of itself on block models/prediction.

OK...infrasound...someone correct me if I am wrong (I don't have time to read the link...but isn't it just low frequency sound? That is what a "P" wave from an earthquake is, and that is what is produced and processed with seismic reflection data.

If faults are emitting something that you are hearing, I think it would have to be more exotic or it would be routinely measured with instruments...instead of sound, perhaps some kind of electromagnetic waves......that then affect the magnetite in your brain (Mike Fuller, ex chair Geol UCSB, now U Hawaii), or the ground you are sitting on, and are transformed into sound (I would vote brain). Maybe someone with too much time on their hands can link to the post a couple of (late?) Novembers ago about the meteor storm...on a NASA page....where meteors were heard at the ground at the speed of light rather than speed of sound.

Perhaps a question to Tom along these lines might be interesting...perhaps you (Petra), John, and I could put together a question along these lines for me or John to email to Tom....

Note: despite a couple of "interesting" predictions by Petra last year...that at least got my interest....I'm not sold on the whole concept. But, if I was to send a Petra et al question to Tom, I would bring up the striking predictions that have been made on this page (Petra, Tim, Shan).

Chris
